Reverse Mentoring

What is reverse mentoring and how can it benefit you and your business? Susan HayesCulleton was live from Berlin to provide you with answers.

Susan was sitting beside Sony who are innovators and always in the know about what tomorrow's generation want. Wondering where they get their information led her to think about where everyone gets their information, specifically herself. Susan engages in both mentoring and reverse mentoring in order to expand her knowledge. She engages in mentoring with people who may have more experience in a specific industry than her or who might be where she would like to be in her career. Reverse mentoring is similar except it involves meeting individuals who are rising up the ranks and seeing what insights they can provide.

Susan engages in reverse mentoring with the teenagers from #SavvyTeenAcademy. They are full of insights into the new social media platforms that they use and which ones they now consider outdated. With digital marketing through social media it is always important to think about what social media your current and future customers are using and this can be challenging as it is an area of rapid change. The social media platforms your company should use can also change based on where you are doing business. For example, while in Shanghai Susan was surprised at how many people were using WeChat. Contrasting this, no one in the #SavvyTeenAcademy course in Ireland was using it.

Susan also makes the point that teenagers get a very bad rep for being addicted to their phones, but this is not the reality. #SavvyTeenAcademy has never had any issues with students using their phones, but that might be different if it was a course directed towards adults. These teenagers, although excited about the advancement of technology, are also worried about the opportunities for work it could take away through robots and other technological advancements. Finally, the teenagers at #SavvyTeenAcademy are eager to learn about everything ranging from other nationalities' cultural norms to a self reflected look at themselves. They haven't had the opportunity to learn about themselves yet and they are eager to know more. For more information visit our website: #reversementoring #mentor #technology #SusanHayesCulleton
